How to Visit Astronomical Observatories In Chile

Top Places To Visit Astronomical Observatories In Chile 2011
Renowned for its lush fields, excellent vineyards and beautiful, clear skies, the Elqui Valley in northern Chile is one of the favorite destinations among travelers looking for breathtaking nature and true experience. In this region, you'll find some of the world's best wines, as well as pisco distilleries, producing the national beverage. But what truly distinguishes the Elqui valley from other wine producing region or beautiful countryside is its extremely dry atmosphere which makes for some of the world's clearest skies and the ideal astronomical observation spot.

This is the reason why no less than 3 international observatories can be found in the Valley: La Silla, El Tololo and Las Campanas. Most of them were built by international organizations with large funding from Europe and the United States. All observatories can be visited on your Chile vacation, although none of them allow for observation through their telescopes. Visiting these immense laboratories of astronomical science and admiring their high tech equipment is still an unforgettable experience that will awake the inner child of anyone who has ever owned a telescope.

La Silla is owned by the organization European Southern Observatory (ESO), financed by a coalition of 8 European governments. The observatory is located at over 2,400 meters, about 150 kilometers from La Serena, the largest city in the area. The site can be visited on Saturdays only, except in July and August, and visitors are required to register in advance in Santiago, or through mail/email/phone to the direct reservation office of the observatory in La Serena. La Silla operates 3 major telescopes and several smaller ones. Be aware that procedures to visit the observatory are complex and can take a long time so make sure you plan your trip well in advance.

El Tololo observatory is owned by an association of US and Chilean universities, and until recently, was home to the largest telescope in the Southern Hemisphere, with a 4-meter wide diameter. It also possesses 6 other telescopes and a radio telescope. Located at 2,200 meters above sea level, the observatory can only be reached from La Serena with private transportation, about 87 kilometers away. Just like for La Silla, it's worth it to plan your visit to El Tololo well in advance and apply for a permit, although in the off-season, you may be able to be granted a visitor's permit the day before should there be any cancellations. Visits are only permitted on Saturdays from 9:00am to 13:00pm and free permits can be obtained by writing to their office in La Serena.

Third international observatory in Chile's Elqui Valley and highest one, at 2,500 meters, Las Campanas belongs to the famous Carnegie institute. With 5 telescopes, this is the smallest one of the three.

Visitors who are not willing to go through the lengthy and cumbersome processes to visit these observatories can travel to Mamalluca, a recent observatory specifically built for the public in the area, where you can actually look through the telescopes. Mamalluca is open daily for nocturnal visits (times depend on the season) and booking in advance is strongly recommended.  Hortense Soulier

Some Unusual Museums in Spain

The Mint Museum in Madrid
Museums in Spain
Like so many other things, the Greeks invented currency. Over the centuries currency has portrayed the different forms of power and has marked the most important historical events. Because of the historical importance of currency, you should visit the Mint Museum where you can take a tour to learn about the history of money over the long span of the centuries.

The museum is built on a vast area that encompasses a large coin collection and a large number of stamps, banknotes and other forms of payment. Drawings, engravings, old books, coins and medals began the museum's assets and over time these assets have increased through donations, acquisitions and copies created by factories. In principle, it worked as a school, engraving all kinds of works by metal artists.
Museums in Spain
Currently, seventeen rooms exhibit objects of gold, silver and bronze of different purities, metal objects such as arrows, shells and ornaments, and foods that have served as money whose value was supported by the whole community that promoted the exchange.

If you want to know the history of the ticket, if you're nostalgic about the peseta or if you are curious about pseudomonades cardboard that circulated in Spain during the Civil War or the coins that circulated during the World Cup of 1982, stick around for the REAL HOUSE OF THE CURRENCY in Doctor Esquerdo 36. Admission is free and the museum is open on all days except Monday.

Museo Guggenheim Bilbao
The Museo Guggenheim is an excellent work of modern architecture. Its entrance is guarded by a cute flower-based monument that reminds visitors of a puppy. There is no doubt that the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is one of the most modern buildings in Spain.

Its undulating forms extend beyond the estuary of Bilbao through the bridge of the Salve. Its style could be termed "organic" with some minimalism, although its best adjective could simply be "modern". With sculpted gray limestone-based coatings and titanium plates, its miasma structure is itself a work of art which visitors will not fail to notice.
Museums in Spain
It was designed by a team lead by the prestigious Frank Gehry for the foundation of Solomon R. Guggenheim. It was opened in 1997 as the Museum of Contemporary Art whose major collections come from the Guggenheim foundation. These collections can still give you a feel for the sensuality of the famous and controversial Peggy Guggenheim, one of the most famous patrons of the arts of the twentieth century.  Alan Marker

Water Parks for Summer Fun

Water Parks for Summer Fun
As spring gives way to summer, families start thinking of staying cool in the heat. The obvious places to go are the beach and the pool, but when those start to bore the kids, plan a trip to the water park.

Many modern water amusement parks combine the best elements of theme parks and a day at the beach. Water slides are no longer the 15 second, stick-and-go ride with a piece of Styrofoam from yesteryear. These new parks continuously find new and innovative designs to draw visitors. The largest single-person drop slide, for example, plunges 120 feet. Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Texas has perfected the uphill ride, and Six Flags White Water in Atlanta is famous for its thrilling "Tornado".
Water Parks for Summer Fun
As visitors expect more, the parks deliver. Many of them encompass 20 acres or more, with the largest in the United States spanning 70 acres. Besides coasters and slides, they now include kiddie pools and playgrounds, lazy rivers to float down, surf machines and wave pools.

And water-themed parks are no longer limited to day trips. Entire resorts have sprung up around the splish-splash fun. Great Wolf Lodge and Kalahari Resorts are two such places. Each company now runs several themed water resorts, as does the wet summer fun icon, Six Flags. Indoor water resorts, such as those in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, enable visitors to enjoy balmy weather and wet fun year-round, even when it's snowing outside.
Water Parks for Summer Fun
Of course, water parks are not just found in the United States. One of the largest in the world is housed in an old airship hangar in Germany. Spain and Britain are home to numerous such parks. Malaysia has a Aqualand, Cancun is home to a Wet 'N Wild, and in Dubai three such water playgrounds exist.

Municipalities are also getting in on the fun. Though the city's wet park may not be as large or exciting as Wet 'N Wild, it still makes for a fun day, especially for toddlers and younger children. Often called splashparks or spraygrounds, these parks feature fountains, jumping water, small slides and buckets that tip on unsuspecting children when they fill up.
Water Parks for Summer Fun
So what does all this water fun mean for you? There's bound to be a water park near you for your summer, or winter, enjoyment. So pack the suits, towels and sunscreen and head out for a day at the park... the water park, that is.  Marisol Dayton

Top 3 Hidden Treasures of Surigao Del Sur

Top Hidden Treasures of Surigao Del Sur
I was born in Tandag, Surigao del Sur, Philippines. It is located in the Eastern Part of Mindanao. It is known for the dusty, poor roads. I never thought that it would be improved in my lifetime! But not until two years ago, when construction of the Surigao del Sur highway started.

On August 5, 2010, I had a chance to have a week-long vacation with my family and the whole clan for our first grand reunion. I could not believe that the once considered highway to nowhere is now a first class, well-constructed and maintained highway. It not only improves business and commerce, but also opens the hidden treasures of the province to the whole world.
Top Hidden Treasures of Surigao Del Sur
Britannia Island's White Beach, San Agustin
Composed of 20 or more islands and islets, this features fine white sands and blue water. On sunny weather, contrast of white sands and blue to dark blue water is an awe-inspiring view. The silica in the sand glistens like minute diamonds under your feet. Strolling in the beach barefoot is a walk in the spa that relaxes your tired feet. Swimming in the clear water is a refreshing experience and the cool breeze from the pacific calms down your mind as it adds up to the one of a kind encounter with nature.
Top Hidden Treasures of Surigao Del Sur
Enchanted River in Hinatuan
Hidden in the thick vegetation of Hinatuan, is a river that seems to originate from the side of the mountain. From the plain view from the top, cool water rose from the unfathomable underwater cavern to the pool-like basin which exits to the sea. The short swim across the basin energizes your body. Schools of different kinds of fishes are a magnificent view during feeding time.
Top Hidden Treasures of Surigao Del Sur
Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig City
Considered as the Niagara Falls of Philippines, these 3 tiered majestic waterfalls is nature at its best. Bamboo rafts will carry you to the bottom of the 55 meters falls for a cool bath. You can experience a soothing massage-like feeling as the water touches your body. Exotic ferns and orchids can also be seen in both sides of the falls. A rainbow overhead the waterfalls in the morning is a splendid view.
Top Hidden Treasures of Surigao Del Sur

I once cursed our leaders for our bad roads. But that changed now! I am now proud of my province and definitely be shouting to the whole world that Surigao del Sur is truly a paradise worth exploring! Erwin Geli
