Bermuda shorts: Most people on Bermuda holidays will, at some point during their holiday on the island, take the plunge and slip on a pair of Bermuda shorts. They have become the national dress of the island, being sported by the country's athletes at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. The shorts have become so popular that they are worn by people from all backgrounds on the island - men and women, white collar and blue collar. They can even be worn as formal wear, in darker colours rather than the more usual pastel. The shorts were developed from the hot-weather uniform of the British army.

Pirate haven: Visitors on Bermuda holidays today will have a much easier journey than many in the past did: during the age of colonialism, Bermuda played a central role in the empires of a number of pirates, who liberated gold and cargo from passing ships. An early pirate named Henry Jennings operated from the island. Jennings became a pirate after being hired by the then governor to help him deal with pirates. Jennings and his crew largely attacked French and Spanish vessels in the area, and he was one of few pirates who managed to outlive the pirate life and go into retirement.

Jamestown Exodus: Those on Bermuda holidays will arrive on the island in good health looking forward to a perfect holiday, but some of their predecessors weren't so lucky. Bermuda was initially colonised by the occupants of a ship on their way to Jamestown. The Sea Venture, Admiral Sir George Somer's ship, was wrecked during a storm, with survivors finding shelter on the island. It took them a year to build two more ships, which they christened the Deliverance and the Patience. They then made the journey to Jamestown. Once they arrived they were appalled by what they found. The population had dwindled to almost 10% of the original following a savage winter, and food had run out. It was decided to abandon the colony and head back to Bermuda, taking a detour to catch fish to sustain them for the journey.

Travel

Very early in life we begin travelling. First we travel from our mother's womb into the wide wonderful world we now inhabit. Next we travel home from the hospital, if we were born in a hospital. We travel a lot during the years we live at home. We go to school. We go with our parents on vacations. We go to camps. We find all sorts of places to go and explore.

When we leave home and begin making a life for ourselves there will be as much or as little travel as required. You may travel only to and from work except for vacation time. Or you may find ways to spend every available moment travelling somewhere or other. It really depends on how much you are curious about the rest of the world and what people are doing there.

Modes of Travel

Most of us have a car and use it a lot. In addition to the travel that is necessary it can be great fun to get in the car and go exploring.

I remember how excited I was when I got my first driver's license and how put out I was that my dad wouldn't often let me have the family car. We only had one car and I found it difficult to accept that dad and mother could possibly need it when it was so important for me to have it to explore hither and yon.

I am very lucky in that professionally I travel all over the world. It is a real passion of mine. I love exploring the world. Wherever I am required to go for work I always try to hire a car and explore as much of the country and its surrounds as time allows. For me driving and being in control of where and when to go is the best. I personally don't like tours or being with groups of people other than those of my choosing.

So for me automobile travel is great and certainly one of my very favorite ways of seeing the world and at times frightening the natives.

Air Travel

Obviously I have to spend a lot of my travelling in airports and airplanes. When I became a musician I knew that I would be doing a lot of travelling. I had colleagues who complained constantly about airports, security, customs, airplanes and on and on. I decided early on that since it was going to be a part of my life it was silly not to enjoy it.

I have found ways to get a kick out of airports. For instance, there is always a bookshop and that will keep me amused for a lengthy period. Also there are heaps of people who are fun to watch and try to figure out where they are going and why. Then there are members of the staff who are usually very friendly and can be of great help.

I love the airplane. There are endless things you can do these days during the flight. Even customs can be interesting if you will just observe people and try to figure out who is trying to smuggle something in or out.

Conclusion

Florida's Beautiful Keys

There is a mystique about America's southern most playground, the Florida Keys. And you better prepare to have a tropical drink handy and sample Key Lime treats while you are here.

Sometimes known as the Conch Republic*, the Florida Keys are a chain-like cluster of more than a thousand low-lying islands that stretch across azure waters. Scarcely a foot above sea level in some places, the Keys dip approximately 220-miles, curving south and west of mainland Florida.

Key Largo is the world's diving capitol and where fresh water from the Everglades converges with the salt water of Florida Bay. Stretching beside the Keys, about six miles seaward is a barrier reef and off Key West lays the only coral reef left in the continental United States.

Key West, just 90-miles from Cuba, is indeed the southern most point of the United States and a picturesque slice of paradise. At the edge of the deep turquoise water are small boats alongside yachts, blue and white, bobbing up and down. They rest a few feet from the surf beating quietly against the shoreline.

We arrived here by way of Miami. The Keys begin at the southeastern tip of the Florida peninsula about 15 miles south of Miami. We got onto the Florida Keys Scenic Highway, also known as the "Overseas Highway," a drive offering dramatic views of the tranquil waters of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. Among the forty-three bridges that we cross is the famed Seven Mile Bridge

The Seven Mile Bridge connects the Middle and Lower Keys, spanning a channel between the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Strait, the bridge carries two-lanes of US highway 1. With 39 expansion joints separating its cement sections, the Seven Mile Bridge is believed to be the world's longest segmental bridge.

Before World War II coming to the Keys was reserved for the wealthy and meant traveling an unhurried ferry for much of the trip, then in 1934 after the city of Key West declared bankruptcy, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration stepped in. In an effort to resurrect Key West's economy, the Federal Government began building highways and bridges connecting Miami to Key West

Today, more than 35% of the population in the Keys lives on Key West. A leisurely walk along Duval Street takes us past interesting cafes and shops, but the Key West Trolley Tour was the best way to see the town's well-known sights which include Ernest Hemingway's Home and the Truman summer White House.

America's charming gulf coast and Florida's beautiful keys are indisputably captivating and a world away from the rest of the country.

Top 3 Hidden Treasures of Surigao Del Sur

I was born in Tandag, Surigao del Sur, Philippines. It is located in the Eastern Part of Mindanao. It is known for the dusty, poor roads. I never thought that it would be improved in my lifetime! But not until two years ago, when construction of the Surigao del Sur highway started.

On August 5, 2010, I had a chance to have a week-long vacation with my family and the whole clan for our first grand reunion. I could not believe that the once considered highway to nowhere is now a first class, well-constructed and maintained highway. It not only improves business and commerce, but also opens the hidden treasures of the province to the whole world.
